Why Are Conservative Nonprofits Struggling?
February 18, 2025
What’s good for freedom, liberty, America, and Western Civilization may not be good for conservative nonprofit organizations.
Why?
Because when conservatives win a big election, many grassroots activists, donors, leaders feel like the pioneers in a Western movie. The calvary has arrived and there’s no need to continue to build the fort.
After last November 5th’s big victory, too many conservatives feel like the war is won, victory is ours, we can relax.
In the three weeks that President Trump has been back in the White House, this is even more so.
President Trump and his strong team is off to a better start than any president in memory.
This feeling that the war is won—we can relax—was true after Reagan’s presidential election in 1980, as well as some of the years during the presidency of Bush 41 and 43.
But of course, the Spiritual War the Democrats have launched is far from over.
To quote Winston Churchill in November 1942 after a big victory by the allies.
“This is not the end. It is not even the end of the beginning.”
The Republicans big victory last November 5th may or may not be the end of the beginning, but it is nothing more than that. Our victory on November 5th simply bought us some time to save our beloved country.
In 2016, I was part of a national Catholic caucus of about 55 conservatives for Trump.
A few days before Donald Trump was sworn in as President on January 20, 2017, we had a celebratory dinner for about 150. Our speaker that night was former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and he delivered a very important message.
Newt’s very important message that evening at the Mayflower Hotel was similar to Churchill’s. He said something along the lines of:
The Democrats will treat their defeat last November as a speed bump—they know they’re coming back (and with Biden they did).
Gingrich went on to make a very important point—he said that the Deep State is so firmly intrenched in public policy and our country’s institutions that it will take four presidential victories by conservatives in a row to break their backs.
In other words, Newt was saying Democrats are dug in so deeply it will take almost two decades to identify and get rid of them. They are not called the Deep State without good reason.
What we have to do is pull the Deep State up by its roots, pour salt over it, so that nothing can ever grow there again.
In the coming weeks I’ll discuss how to effectively market conservative nonprofit organizations in these difficult and challenging times when conservatives feel that maybe the war has been won.
